The classroom quantity. 250 grams is enough to run several groups at once rather than passing a single vial around a room — which is the difference between a demonstration students watch and an experiment they do.

It is the size most Australian schools order.

What you get

  • 250g of 99.99% (4N) pure gallium in a sealed screw-top vial
  • A 10mL syringe for dispensing into smaller containers
  • A Safety Data Sheet, supplied with every order as standard

At 5.91 g/cm³, 250 grams is roughly 42 mL of liquid — enough to split across four or five working stations and still keep a reserve.

Why 250g for teaching

Multiple stations. Divide it into smaller vials so groups work simultaneously. Gallium is fully reusable, so the same 250g serves year after year — melting and resolidifying doesn't consume or degrade it.

It covers the whole curriculum sequence. States of matter and phase change, physical versus chemical change, density, expansion on freezing, and grain-boundary embrittlement via the aluminium can. See gallium for education for curriculum notes.

It replaces mercury. Mercury has been progressively removed from Australian school laboratories. Gallium demonstrates several of the same properties with none of the toxicity, handling regime or disposal problem.

For school and university buyers

  • Safety Data Sheet in Australian 16-section format, naming Gallium Sales as supplier — the document required before a chemical enters a prep room
  • Certificates of analysis with lot number and assay, available on request
  • Written quotes showing ABN, quote number, ex-GST line pricing, freight and validity date
  • Purchase orders accepted from schools and universities

Solid or liquid on arrival?

Either, depending on the weather — gallium melts at 29.8°C. Arriving liquid is completely normal and nothing is lost. Chill the sealed vial to resolidify it, or stand it in warm water to melt it.

Handling

Non-toxic and safe to handle with normal care. Wash hands afterwards. Keep it away from aluminium — gallium permanently embrittles aluminium and the damage is irreversible, which matters in a school with aluminium fittings and equipment. It also stains fabric and porous surfaces.

Price per gram

$2.02/g, against $2.20/g at 100g and $2.80/g at 20g.

Dispatched from Perth within 1–3 business days.

Shipping and delivery

Dispatched from Perth, Western Australia within 1–3 business days. We ship Australia-wide by Australia Post with tracking on every order. Shipping is $9.95 flat, and free on orders of $250 or more.

We send a maximum of 1kg of gallium per parcel, so a larger order arrives as more than one parcel, sometimes on different days, at no extra cost. We ship within Australia only.

Returns

If something is not right, contact us within 30 days and we will sort it out. Please get in touch before returning anything so we can arrange it properly.

Gallium often arrives liquid in warm weather. That is normal and not a fault — chill the sealed container and it will resolidify.

Common Questions

Is gallium safe?

Yes — it is non-toxic and safe to handle with normal care. Wash your hands with soap and warm water afterwards, and keep it out of reach of small children. Keep it away from aluminium: gallium permanently embrittles aluminium, and the damage cannot be reversed.

What documentation comes with my order?

A Safety Data Sheet is supplied with every order, as standard — you can also download the current SDS (PDF) at any time. Our gallium is 99.99% (4N) pure. Certificates of analysis are available on request for schools, universities and other institutional buyers — just ask when you order.

How do I clean it up?

If it solidifies on a surface, warm it with a hair dryer until it melts and wipe it up with a paper towel. Warm soapy water helps with any residue. Don't use aluminium foil or aluminium tools to scrape it.
