Gallium is dense — 5.91 g/cm³, about six times heavier than water — so 20 grams is only about 3.4 mL of liquid. It is a small pool, and it is heavier in the hand than people expect.

What 20g will and won't do

It will: melt in your palm at 29.8°C, pour and re-pour indefinitely, form a mirror film on glass, and destroy a small patch of an aluminium can.

It won't: cast a spoon. A usable gallium spoon needs closer to 100g. If the disappearing spoon is what you're after, start with the 100g.

Solid or liquid on arrival?

Either, depending on the weather. Gallium melts at 29.8°C, so in a warm month it will very likely arrive liquid. That is completely normal and nothing is lost — put the sealed vial in the fridge and it will resolidify. To melt it again, stand the vial in warm water.

Handling

Gallium is non-toxic and safe to handle with normal care. Wash your hands afterwards and don't ingest it. Keep it out of reach of small children.

The one real precaution is aluminium. Gallium permanently embrittles aluminium and the damage cannot be reversed — keep it away from window frames, laptop casings, cookware, tools and ladders. It also stains fabric and other porous surfaces.

Price per gram

At this size you are paying for convenience rather than value: $2.80/g, against $2.20/g at 100g and $2.02/g at 250g. If you already know you want gallium, the 100g is better value.
