Description
Discover the world of germanium with our high-purity 99.999% (5N) germanium metal ingot.
Germanium is a lustrous, brittle, greyish-white metalloid that played a foundational role in the electronics revolution - the first transistor was built using germanium in 1948. Today it remains a critical material in advanced optics and semiconductor technology.
This germanium ingot is perfect for collectors, hobbyists, researchers, and science enthusiasts alike. Germanium has a density of 5.32 g/cm³ and a high melting point of 937.4°C, making it a solid, hard, and visually striking element to add to any collection.
Your germanium ingot will arrive in solid form with a characteristic metallic lustre. Store in a dry environment - germanium is stable in air at room temperature.
Key Features
High Purity: 99.999% (5N) pure germanium for exceptional quality.
Quantity: 20g of solid metal ingots.
Semiconductor Heritage: The element that launched the transistor era - a must-have for element collectors.
Infrared Transparent: One of the few materials that transmits infrared radiation, used in thermal imaging and night vision.
Stable and Durable: Hard, brittle, and resistant to oxidation at room temperature.
Applications
Element Collecting: A prized addition to any element collection, with a distinctive metallic appearance.
Infrared Optics: Germanium is widely used in infrared windows, lenses, and thermal imaging systems.
Semiconductors and Electronics: Used in high-speed transistors, solar cells, and LED technology.
Fibre Optics: Germanium dioxide is a key dopant in optical fibres, improving light transmission.
Audio and Music: Germanium transistors are sought after for vintage-style guitar fuzz pedals, prized for their warm, smooth tone.
Please Note
Germanium is generally considered non-toxic in its elemental form, though as with any metal, wash hands after handling. Handle with care as germanium is brittle and can chip or fracture if dropped.
Shipping and delivery
Shipping and delivery
Dispatched from Perth, Western Australia within 1–3 business days. We ship Australia-wide by Australia Post with tracking on every order. Shipping is $9.95 flat, and free on orders of $250 or more.
We send a maximum of 1kg of gallium per parcel, so a larger order arrives as more than one parcel, sometimes on different days, at no extra cost. We ship within Australia only.
Returns
Returns
If something is not right, contact us within 30 days and we will sort it out. Please get in touch before returning anything so we can arrange it properly.
Gallium often arrives liquid in warm weather. That is normal and not a fault — chill the sealed container and it will resolidify.

Common Questions
Is gallium safe?
Yes — it is non-toxic and safe to handle with normal care. Wash your hands with soap and warm water afterwards, and keep it out of reach of small children. Keep it away from aluminium: gallium permanently embrittles aluminium, and the damage cannot be reversed.
What documentation comes with my order?
A Safety Data Sheet is supplied with every order, as standard — you can also download the current SDS (PDF) at any time. Our gallium is 99.99% (4N) pure. Certificates of analysis are available on request for schools, universities and other institutional buyers — just ask when you order.
How do I clean it up?
If it solidifies on a surface, warm it with a hair dryer until it melts and wipe it up with a paper towel. Warm soapy water helps with any residue. Don't use aluminium foil or aluminium tools to scrape it.
